Successful action over hedge removal

CPRE Northumberland was alerted in March to the unauthorised removal of a piece of established hedgerow in Shiremoor.

A local resident had spotted it at the Earsdon View site of Bellway Homes plc and had become concerned.

Our acting Chairman, Professor Howard Elcock, wrote to North Tyneside Council immediately, with a following letter in May.

The Council contacted Bellway and further removal of hedgerow was stopped. On assurances from Bellway that a check on the presence of birds' nests was made before removal of the hedge, the Council did not refer the matter to Northumbria Police at that time.

In a recent communication with Professor Elcock, the Council's Planning Enforcement Officer was able to inform CPRE

'We are currently working with Bellway to ensure that appropriate remediation works are undertaken to alleviate the damage caused and are considering whether or not formal legal action would be appropriate.'

This successful outcome shows that timely action against the destruction of landscape features can bear fruit, and that communities need not stand helplessly by as their concerns are brushed aside by developers.
