Ancient woodland creates a world we can immerse ourselves in. From the pristine, sweetly-fresh greens of May to the rich intensity of autumn colour, woodland surrounds us in its protective embrace. Classic examples abound throughout the county and everyone with any feeling for the natural world has a favourite, often not too far from home. This one, however, needs a special trip, but one which many Northumbrians are happy to make at any time of the year. Allen Banks, a National Trust treasure accessible off the A69 just south of Bardon Mill, here displays hints of October gold.
