Cheviot sunset

This dramatic picture shows how the landscapes of Northumberland can, in different lights, evoke intense feelings of awe and poignancy.

This is a midsummer sunset, but there is nothing of the chocolate box in this image, more a sense of anger mixed with despair as the failures of the day extinguish the bright hopes of the morning.

These lines by A E Housman convey similar feelings in words...

                      Ensanguining the skies

                      How heavily it dies

                         Into the west away;

                      Past sight and touch and sound

                      Not further to be found,

                      How hopeless under ground

                         Falls the remorseful day

                            (A E Housman)
